Characteristics of a Good English Teacher

Dear Viewers, it’s always a good experience for me to keep in touch with you through this blog.  Thank you for contacting us and for your valuable feedback and comments. As we have celebrated Teacher’s Day I felt like sharing the essential qualities a English teacher have to possess. Let’s see them and inculcate these in our life. I wish to quote Sir Henry Vandyke who said “An average teacher explains, a poor teacher complains, a good teacher teaches, an excellent teacher inspires.” A language teacher is decidedly a different type of teacher as compared to the teacher of other subjects.  Only a person with distinctive tastes and abilities can become a good teacher of English. There are certain qualities essential for a good English teacher and we shall see them one by one.

           1.      Mastery over the language:

The first and foremost quality of an English teacher is that he should have mastery over the language.

           2.      Good pronunciation:

An English teacher should speak flawlessly and fluently with good pronunciation.

           3.      Good handwriting:

The handwriting of the language teacher is of great importance. Handwriting on the blackboard and notebooks should be attractive and legible.  Only good handwriting teachers will result into good handwriting of the students as they imitate the teacher.

           4.      Flexible:

A good teacher of English must be ever ready to improve his language in every possible way. He must be always ready for self-analysis and self-correction. He should be flexible, adjustable and compromising type.

           5.      Staunch believer of modern English:

The good English teacher tries to follow the modern grammar books where the emphasis is on the usage of the language. At the same time he does not keep the traditional grammar book apart.

           6.      Interest in Literature:

A good English teacher has ever increasing interest in English literature. It will arouse the real interest of the learners in the language.

           7.      Creative:

There should be creative mind for a good English teacher. The creative teacher has always something new to say. Suppose the teacher has to teach some essay for many years continuously to the same class, he should not give the same lecture to the students.

           8.      Working knowledge of different method:

A good English teacher is never a slave to any method of teaching English. Rather must equip himself to use different methods in different situations as per needs and requirement of the learners.

          9.      Learner-Centered and Activity-Centered Approach:

A good language teacher adopts learner-centered and activity-centered approach. He puts the students in different situations and makes them learn the language.

          10.  Proficiency:
The teacher must also be equipped with the knowledge of handling hardware and software that is very essential to make the teachers proficient. In teaching English it helps in far more satisfactory manners.

            11.  Knowledge of psychology:
Like any other teacher, the English teacher also should have the knowledge of educational psychology. With practical understanding of psychology, he can tackle situations rightly.
Apart from these qualities, a language teacher should also have other qualities such as good personality, class control and ability to encourage pupils. And above all, he should be affectionate and patient towards students. Thus a good English teacher should possess all these qualities to enhance the teaching-learning process to a level of highness.
