Sentence Pattern

Hello Dear viewers, am glad to meet you through this blog. Hope you are safe and sound. Today we shall discuss the sentence pattern in English language. The basic sentence pattern has the following five components.  They are
1.      Subject
2.      Verb
3.      Object
4.      Complement
5.      Adjunct

        1.      Subject:

In a sentence the word or phrase which does the action on which is spoken about is called subject.

                                               Ex:  Paul is a student.

In this sentence, Paul is the subject.

        2.      Verb:

The action word in the sentence is called the verb. It also defines the being of the subject.

Ex:  a) I am doing homework.

In this sentence, ‘am doing’ is a verb.

                                                   b) Dogs bark.

In this sentence, ‘bark’ is verb.

         3.      Object:

An object part normally answers the questions ‘what’ and ‘who’. There are two types of objects, Direct object and Indirect object.

Ex:  My uncle gave me a pen.

In this sentence, ‘me’ is an Indirect object and ‘a pen’ is a Direct object.

         4.      Complement:

Complement is a word that completes the sentence. If we take complement out of the sentence, it will lose its meaning.

                                          Ex:  Samuel is a captain.

In this sentence ‘captain’ is a complement.

          5.      Adjunct:

Adjunct answers the question ‘when’, ‘where’ and ‘how’. They may be adverbs prepositional phrases or noun groups.

Ex:  I will come at 7 o’ clock.

In this sentence, at '7 o’ clock ‘is an Adjunct.
