The Four Language Skills
Hello viewers, it’s nice to be connected with you
once again through this blog. I hope you read and like my articles. Don’t
forget to mail us. Today am back with one more interesting subject ad that’s
the four major skills
While learning a language it must be
considered the fact that language is a skill subject rather than knowledge
subject. In the teaching-learning of English, the main skills are listening,
speaking , reading and writing. These four skills are categorized into two
types. They are i) Productive or Active skills and ii) Receptive or Passive
skills.
Speaking and Writing
are skills that involve production on the part of language user. Hence they are
called Productive Skills. On the other hand, Listening and Reading are
Receptive Skills where the language users receives information through these.
Listening Skills:
In
the learning of language, listening is the basis of everything. Practice in
listening is the first and foremost principle in language learning. Without it,
the whole foundation of language will be weak and defective. The listening
skill is determined by two factors. They are interest and usefulness. One
listens to that which he is interested and to that which he finds useful. In this connection the teaching of English
should be made interesting and purposeful. This will enhance the listening
skill of the learners.
Speaking Skills:
Language
exists first in its spoken form. It can be learnt primarily through speech.
Knowing a language is the ability to understand and speak the language. A good
speaker of English can recall words and structures quickly. He can produce
characteristic English speech sounds both in isolation and in combination. He
can use appropriate stress and intonation patterns and can use appropriate
words and structures to express his thoughts and feelings. Speaking is
considered as an active and productive skill.
Reading Skills:
Reading
is a process of looking at a written or printed symbol and translating it into
an appropriate sound. This spoken symbol is further associated with an object
for which it stands. Thus Reading constitutes three elements- the symbol, the
sound and the sense. When a person reads anything, his eyes go on moving along
with the printed or written symbols. In fact the eyes do not move smoothly in
one movement. They move in jumps separated by very short stops. These stops or
pauses are known as fixations. The number of words read in one complete
movement of the eye is called the Eye –span.
Writing Skills:
According
to Bacon, ”Reading makes a full man, conference a ready man and writing an
exact man.” Writing is on immense importance. Writing skill reinforces oral and
reading work. Writing helps the organization of thought. One is able to
communicate one’s ideas through writing. Language learning, in fact, is said to
be incomplete without developing the skill of writing.
