Punctuation

Dear readers, Its wonderful to be connected with you through this blog. Thank you for all your valuable comments and some have called me over the phone and asked me about the Punctuation marks. So today I thought of sharing Punctuation marks. Punctuation marks are essential while writing the sentence as it gives meaning to the sentences. When you don't use punctuation marks or misplaced the punctuation marks, the meaning and the sense differs which leads to confusion and clarity. Now look at the following sentences.

                         1. My wife, who is in Mysore is coming today.
                        2. My wife who is in Mysore, is coming today.

The above two sentences look alike but has a lot of difference. The first sentence says that a man's wife who is in Mysore is returning that day. Whereas the second sentence says that a man has a wife in Mysore and she is returning that day. It also carries an implied meaning that he has a wife in some other places too. It looks awkward. Isn't it? The second sentence can break a family too. Just see how a small punctuation mark can separate a family life. That's the power of Punctuation marks and one has to be careful while placing the punctuation marks.

The word punctuation comes from the Latin word, 'Punctee' which means a point. Therefore punctuation is the right or proper use of putting in points or stops in writing.

1.The Full stop or Period (.)

                              1. The full stop is used for a complete pause and separation.

2. Comma (,)

The comma is the shortest pause. It is used to separate a series of words in the sentence                               construction.

ex: He lost his family, wealth, health and also reputation.

3. Semicolon (;)

The semicolon is used for a stop more important than indicated by the comma.

ex: He came; he saw; he conquered.

4. Colon (:)

It represents a more important stop than the semi colon. It is introduced before a quotation..

ex: Pope says: To err is human; forgive divine.

5. Interrogative mark (?)

The mark of interrogation is used at the end of a direct question.

                                       ex: What is your name?

6. Exclamatory mark (!)

The exclamatory mark is used after the interjection and words and phrases expressing                                   sudden emotions.

                                        ex: Alas! Hurrah! Ah!

7. Inverted commas or quotation marks (")

They are used to denote the exact words of a speaker or quotation.
